Charter

Purpose:

This list exists to provide an opportunity for members of The Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom (VSUK) to communicate freely with each other. Nothing posted to it should be in any way inferred as VSUK policy.

What's on-topic:

Anything of mutual interest to list members which is related to vegetariansm and VSUK. Such as:

Exchanges of ideas between members.
An information resource where questions may be posed and answered by anyone on the list.
A source of expert information, either from VSUK staff or members with a particular expertise.
Distribution of useful information by anyone on the list.
Distribution of news and other information.

What's off-topic:

Anything not fairly obviously related to vegetarianism.
Anything which is not of any relevance to VSUK.
Specific questions of interest to very few people
Large files to be shared (use personal email)
General chat that may belong on a more general mailing list
Queries to a specific member of staff (use personal mail)
Ordering books, merchandise or literature etc
Local Contact matters (use the VegNet list)

Guidelines

Please observe the following to help the list run smoothly:

Don't cross-post messages, ie send the same message to several different lists by including them in the cc box. This can result in people getting unwanted duplications and replies from other lists that are not relevant.

If you use the reply button to respond to a message, remember the reply will be sent to the whole list. This is great for general discussions but there are occasions when your reply may be more personal. In such a case, please email the recipient directly rather than via the list. Please remember there are some people on the list who may not be able to handle a high volume of messages.

Keep messages brief and to the point. If replying to an earlier message, don't quote any more than is necessary to place your reply in context.

Keep on topic. If the discussion starts to wander, please consider taking it off the list altogether and continuing by personal email.

Make sure your subject line reflects the content of your message accurately. This is very important as it means people can choose which messages are of interest and delete the rest. If a discussion has been going on for some time, the content of the messages can drift away from the subject heading, so please keep an eye on this!

Be polite and respectful of other people's views.

Unless a message explicitly asks you to "help spread the word", please don't post any messages on to other lists etc, unless you have permission from the original author.

The Owner

This list is ultimately the responsibilty of Council on behalf of the members, regardless of whether any council members are actually on the list at any one time. Day to day responsibilty rests with HQ staff who have the right to terminate the membership of anyone on this list should it be considered necessary to do so.

The list is 'owned' by Geraint 'Gedge' Edwards - gedge@veg.org - as it's running on his machine. Gedge naturally has the right to discontinue the service at his discretion should it be necessary for any reason.

Members

Membership of this list is restricted to full or associate members of VSUK. A valid membership number is required for subscription and list membership will be terminated if VSUK membership is not renewed.

How to proceed

To subscribe, send an email to the admin address (vegsoc-talk-request@veg.org) with the following message:

subscribe vegsoc-talk full-name vegsoc-membership-number

To post: send mail to the list and it will be forwarded to everyone else on the list.

Replies are set to the list. If you want to reply to the original poster you will need to change the address, and cc as appropriate.

In order to keep traffic down please consider whether your reply (or an originating mail) is of interest to everyone on the list, or just one or two people.

To unsubscribe, send an email to the admin address (vegsoc-talk-request@veg.org) with the following message:

Troubleshooting

If you find your messages are being rejected, please try the following before getting in touch with us:

1. Check that you are sending your message from the email address which is actually subscribed.

2. Check that your message is in "plain text" format. It shouldn't contain any html or attachments.

3. Check that your message isn't too long - ie that you are not just hitting the reply button and forwarding a long screed of previously posted messages with your reply. If in doubt, try sending your reply in a new message.
