MORRISSEY PIPS MCCARTNEY TO THE POST The latest poll in celebration of National Vegetarian Week (18-24 May) reveals that vegetarians can be pin ups too! The Smiths front man has stolen the crown from national treasure Sir Paul McCartney for first time after years in the shadow of the ex-Beatle. Singer Morrissey, who celebrates his 50th birthday this week (22 May) with a concert for fans in Manchester, had in previous years only managed to come a close second to famous vegetarian campaigner Sir Paul. Morrissey, reportedly vegetarian for 39 years, has been quoted as saying: "If you love animals, obviously it doesn't make sense to hurt them.” He also named one of his albums ‘Meat is Murder’. Joanna Lumley, who stormed to victory in the female category, is famously a long standing animal rights activist, although in recent weeks has dominated the headlines as the face of the Gurkha Justice Campaign, a role she has undertaken since 2008. Earlier this year, Lumley joined forces with Jamie Oliver for the documentary ‘Jamie Saves Our Bacon’ and acted out the horror of a pig’s life in an effort to highlight the welfare problems of the 160m pigs raised in Europe each year. The poll, completed by 236 people across the UK was commissioned to mark National Vegetarian Week 2009, which is sponsored Cauldron Foods.
