PARTY piece

During the festive season, elegant little mouthfuls can provide a welcome relief from heavy and filling food. Impress your guests with food writer Heather Grant's stylish and tasty canapés

Forget heavy mince pies and soggy vol au vents, canapé's provide a light and attractive alternative, especially when presented on pretty ceramic plates or in attractive wicker baskets.

For an early evening party, choose at least four different canapés and double up on the quantities to provide eight to ten bits per person. Alternatively, serve one or two with drinks before dinner as tasty appetisers.

The bases and fillings may be made well in advance - the pastry cases stored in airtight containers and the fillings covered in the fridge, ready to put together just before the guests arrive. Ensure canapés remain crisp by assembling at the last moment
