Can be ordered online at&amp;#160;http://www.bookhams.com/cheese/twineham-grange.html&lt;/p&gt;</description><pubDate>Thu, 25 Oct 2012 07:50:00 GMT</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">0c6f70ee-304e-4661-ab4b-85a71a1cd547</guid></item><item><title>Parmesan again!</title><link>http://www.vegsoc.org/page.aspx?pid=1631</link><description>&lt;p&gt;Not only have I informed the people at The Moor &amp;amp; Pheasant near Thirsk that Parmesan is not vegetarian but have informed the editor of the Darlington &amp;amp; Stockton Times, who wrote in a review that it catered well for vegetarians. &amp;#160;A dish containing Parmesan was labelled as vegetarian but it turns out that there wasn't a single vegetarian main course on the menu. &amp;#160;Of course they say in their e-mail that the chefs can modify dishes to suit individual requirements so I'm now going to try to persuade them to say so on the website. &amp;#160;I have also pointed out that both their only veggie starter and their only veggie sandwich&amp;#160;contain cheese but that not all vegetarians eat cheese. &amp;#160;I don't usually mention 'vegan' at the outset.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I suggest that everyone who has this and similar problems suggest that the chefs concerned may like to look at www.ivu.org/recipes, where there are more than 3,000 recipes. &amp;#160;What I don't usually mention is that they are actually all vegan!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I also always give the URL for the appropriate pages of the VegSoc and Vegan Soc. websites.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Patricia (Local Contact in N. I rang the people who deal with the website and the publications, the lady was very nice and did seem to have an idea that Parmesan and the like can never be veggie and said she would 'pass it on to her colleagues' I seriously doubt anything will change. I would just like a side note about the cheese on the recipes and an alternative stated that is on plan as the cheese itself is not really that great for the plan. Whilst I was on with her I had a general moan about SW attitute to veggies, although better than most organisations, it is very slanted toward meat eaters whilst we veggies still pay the same fees for I feel, a lesser service, less recipes less group thereapy (how can a group of meat eaters help me really when it comes to my personal weight loss?Anyway at least on SW I now have to stay clear of ready meals as my local Morrisons has seriously sidelined V options in a recent refit, they dont seem to ever mark anything 'V' which isnt but if I want tomato pasta (about all they do) Ill open a tin of toms and do it myself. I just got out VEGETARIAN BIBLE and was impressed at the detail at the beginning explaining how products such as cheese can be non-vegetarian due to annimal rennet etc. This section even says to watch Pesto as it usually contains non-vegetarian cheese. They give a list of readily available vegetarian cheeses. Parmesan and Grana Padano are not on this list!&amp;#160;Then one of the very first recipes is Pesto which has parmesan in! Parmesan is used frequently in the book with dedicated parmesan recipes and as just an added ingredient. Grana Padano (another non-vegetarian cheese) is also used in ingredients. I then checked EASY VEGETARIAN and it is the same, including non-vegetarian cheeses. The final straw was on a cookery show last week with Simon Hopkinson where he cooked Braised Fennel with Parmesan and said it was a "perfect dish for vegetarians"!! This man is a professional chef and food writer appearing on prime-time TV on the national broadcasting channel! I complained yet again and received an email which directed me to read this blog post from Ramona Andrews, BBC Food Host...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial black,avant garde;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: x-small;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"&gt;---"This is a good point about parmesan cheese. Traditional parmesan is always made with animal-derived rennet. I would highly recommend this to any one. Most only vegetarian option had parmesan in it, and when i mentioned this they told me I could ask them to cook something. I don't think this is good enough, I want to go out and not think not rack my brains about what I would like to eat, How do I know if they even have the ingredients in for the thing i request they do. I do not think it is good enough that most restaurants have 12 meat option and 1 vegetarian option which most of the time is not vegetarian anyway. Therefore it could or could not be vegetarian. Unfortunately this means checking with individual manufacturers.
