Marble Beers to launch new range of cloudy ales-good news for veggies and beer drinkers in Manchester. archives

October 2nd 2000

Beer drinkers will be pleased to know that from October 10th a range of tasty, naturally brewed, cloudy ales will be available on draught. Not only are the Marble Beers full of flavour but they are free from additives, made from natural ingredients and are the first draught real ales to be approved by The Vegetarian Society. Launched as part of the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, the beers are made using organic malt and hops, GMO free yeast and water. Chorlton-cum-Hazy, Cloudy Marble, Uncut Amber, The Old Lag and Chocolate Heavy are all brewed in Manchester and are naturally cloudy for a fuller taste. As an added bonus the brewers have found their product has a reduced hangover compared to non-organic beers - however they do admit that their customer tests are not very scientific.

The launch party will be at The Bar in Chorlton on the 10th of October. The beers will be on sale from the 11th October initially at The Bar, The Marble Arch Inn and The Marble Beer House with plans to bottle the beers in the future. To find out more about Marble Beers and how to obtain invites to the launch and tastings please call Jan Whitehead on 0161 610 1073.

Many breweries still use isinglass to clear the materials held in suspension in beers. Isinglass is derived from the swim bladders of certain tropical fish - making the product not suitable for vegetarians.

The Vegetarian Society's symbol was established in 1969. Since then it has become the most widely recognised and trusted stamp of vegetarian approval anywhere in the world. You will find the symbol on a huge range of products, including retail food and drinks, catering supplies, household goods, cosmetics and toiletries. The strength of the symbol is based on products meeting four firm criteria. No other symbol gives consumers such reassurance and inspires the trust that comes with the approved by symbol.

For further information on the symbol see Setting Standards for a general background, or contact the Society's Corporate Relations department on 0161 925 2000.

The Vegetarian Society, a registered charity, is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world. It offers an independent voice able to promote and provide information on vegetarianism. The Society operates its own "V" symbol trademark, The Cordon Vert Cookery School, a membership scheme and publishes The Vegetarian magazine quarterly.
