BETTER HOSPITAL FOOD

Visitors comments during the first week of the poll (these are exactly as writ, without spelling/grammar corrections...):

I think that the NHS Plan for Better Hospital Food is a fabulous initiative and will benefit all patients. There is nothing nicer than having decent food after an illness. The Nuts in the Spinach and Nut could be changed to feta maybe?

Just a thought. For a hot summer day I feel there should be more 'cooler' food such as salads and baby potatoes etc. I wouldn't particularly fancy casseroles, bakes etc on a hot day. Also jacket potatoes are ideal with a wide range of things such as chilli's ect not just baked beans.

Providing veggie dish without diary (Cheese) would benefit vegans, and the chef.
A nod in the right direction *can* make other things confusing. I notice that some of the NHS recipes include meat stocks in what are otherwise vegetable soups. I am concerned that the vegetarian society *may* OK recipes but not methods of production eg. not stiring food with spoons which have been in meat dishes. Will the puddings and other 'obvious' products be clearly labelled? More cheese and nuts please. Most vegetarian meals aren't big enough. Potatoes or bread need to be served with most dishes. No matter how nice the initial description, there is nothing worse than being served a plate of bland vegetables in a bland sauce. I am so pleased to have this opportunity to have a say and hopefully be taken seriously. Thanks to all involved.
When I go into the hospital I ask to see the chef and give him a list as to what I want and I make sure I get what i asked for it works each time
I found it interesting looking at the poll to see that most people as i have gave low or no votes to the kind of vegetarian food normally served in hospital on one occasion they could only offer me a cheese sanwich for my evening meal!
I have recently qualified as a Hospital Play Specialist and have found that the vegetarian food on the childrens menu seems worse than the adults.
Both children and adults alike seem to feel it is also the quality that is not good enough.

One of the best menus I have seen
it would be nice to have a choice of vegi dishes in hospital, but as meat eaters spend more time in hospital than vegetarians thereis not much hope
Great to see a wide variety of vegetarian options given latest surveys etc on healthy eating. Keep up the good work.
Aubergine Cannelonis filled with Pesto and Mozarella Cheese in tomato sauce.
I don't see really any breakfast dishes. Also, no use of flax seeds, brewers yeast these are good in hot cereal with some non fat yogurt topped. Very good for IBS people.
Also, can't tell if these are high fat recipies-while on internet for recipies(vegitarian) some are so high fat its a sin.
Also, some dessert options as fresh berries,(blueberry proven to be an excellent for ones health), peaches, grapes.
Usually you only get bananas, apple and oranges.
Thank-you for your time.

The [Peggy's] salsa is made with black beans, shoepeg corn, diced tomatoes, diced green chilies, diced cilantro, diced green pepper, chopped green onion and topped with a dressing of olive oil, lime juice and a dash of lemon pepper. Out of this world.
My family and I are vegan. Please make sure we are catered for as a matter of course rather than having to fight and make sure all the way - or just not eat as was the case when I had my baby!
I like meals with no garlic - I don't want to scare away my visitors! I enjoy anything with lentils, such as lentil soup, stew etc. Thanks.
dishe should not be very oily and should haave an authentic taste. Rice dishes should be included. Dishes should cbe prepared sperately from meat dishes
Its nice to see Vegetable Lasagne is not on the list!! This is a great idea so long as those preparing the vegetarian meals are capable -i.e not using the same utensils when serving veggie & meat meals etc - so many places claim to be veggie friendly but hygenie lets them down.
when given the chance to chose for vegetarians, more of the options should be vegan. golden rice with salad (lettuce, beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, radish etc.) Is my favourite meal.
Having been in hospital recently (Lon Bor of Redbridge - King George Hosp), I thought the portions of vegetables given was very poor (about 2 teaspoons of peas with the fish - no exagerration). The best dish I ate there was a vegetarian option - Asian vegetarian. <
I would like to see vegetarian meals for diabetics on hospital menus. My last stay was awful!

I'm vegan and have recently been in hospital. The only option available for lunch was fruit juice, so I'd like to see a vegan choice, such as herb pate, Redwood soya slices or tofu sausages.
Just because I don't eat meat, doesn't mean I don't like that taste of it! I do! I just don't want to eat animals. There should be some meat substitute dishes available! This is the year 2001 - there are hundreds of meat substitute products on the market!
This is a great idea!
These dishes are too beany! I've been veggie (vegan actually) for over 10 years, and while I like beans as much/little as the next person, they do not make up the main protein source of my diet. Mainly I eat soy products, such as tofu or meat & dairy alternatives. I think the entire catering industry believes that veggies/vegans eat only hummus, stuffed peppers and red kidney beans in some form or another. Which is a very outdated idea of vegetarianism (think 60s hippie communes), and very far from current reality.
Why not make use of the many veggie/vegan alternatives to animal products out there; e.g. vegan sandwich slices, vegan cheese, chicken roast, bacon rashers, etc? What about soymilk, vegan ice cream and cream cheese etc etc? Soya mince added to tomato sauce makes the most amazing vegan bolognese sauce, which can be used in many dishes. I could go on and on. The basic point I want to make is that many veggies/vegans like to eat just exactly what everyone else eats, but just veggie/vegan versions of it, not necessarily totally different types of food. I can only speak for my family however, I don't know how many others feel this way.

-Please, more vegan options! Veganism is THE healthiest diet possible, so hospitals should be falling over themselves to offer vegan food, yet they seem to do everything they can to avoid it. Giving better vegetarian food options is great, but if you make the choices vegan then they are suitable for both veggies and vegans. -Finally, I'm just really glad that the NHS has made this step forward in approaching the VegSoc! Thanks a million.

If you make the food Vegan Then EVERYONE can eat it! Indian Veggies, Kosher, halal, Vegans, veggies, fish eaters, Meat eaters, Make it easy on yourself!!!

[Baked bean pie (wholemeal pastry)] ... with substantial vegetables. But of overriding importance: whatever it is it should clearly be labelled VEGAN (leaving no element of doubt; to a vegan, "vegetarian" translates as "not eatable" because it is likely to contain egg or dairy). Just seeing the word "vegan" is hugely reassuring to a vegan -- we can then lie back and recover! Better still if it bears the UK Vegan Society's symbol.
