Veggie vitals

What’s a vegetarian?

  • The Vegetarian Society defines a vegetarian as a person who eats no fish, flesh or fowl. Vegetarians also avoid the by-products of slaughter such as gelatine or animal rennet in cheese.

What do they eat?

  • Everything else! Veggies live on a diet of fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, pulses, seeds, with or without free-range eggs and dairy products.

Who are vegetarians?

  • A diverse group, people like YOU. There are vegetarians all over the UK, from every walk of life imaginable.

Why do people go veggie?

  • Some people have a belief that it is wrong to slaughter animals for food, and have a real concern about the welfare of animals reared for food.
  • Others are worried about the effect of meat production and fishing on the environment, for instance the destruction of vast areas of rainforest for cattle ranching, the serious over fishing of the world’s oceans and the link between meat production and poverty and famine in developing countries.
  • In recent years salmonella and CJD have changed the eating habits of many individuals, as have issues in modern food production.
  • Other factors in becoming vegetarian are the health advantages with recent research outlining less obesity, high blood pressure, coronary disease and fewer diet related cancers.
  • Some people just become bored with the limitations of meat, craving something new and exciting.

Types of vegetarian.

Vegetarianism can fall into several categories with the main criteria being the non-consumption of animal or fish products derived from slaughter. Below are the main categories:
