Who we are
- The Vegetarian Society
is the oldest
vegetarian organisation in
the world, formed in 1847!
- As a registered charity,
it offers an
independent voice dedicated
to promoting and providing information on a vegetarian diet. We are
the modern face of vegetarianism and the leading experts.
- The Vegetarian Society is a membership organisation. We exist to represent
our members and the UK’s 4 million vegetarians by raising awareness
through educating, providing information, research, contact with the
media and by working with the food industry.
- The Society’s head office is based at Parkdale, in Altrincham, Cheshire,
just south of Manchester. We also have a network of contacts throughout
the country.
What we do
- We promote the best
of vegetarian cooking through our very own Cordon
Vert Cookery School,
the home of vegetarian cuisine. The school holds courses throughout
the year for everyone, from the amateur to the professional. As well
as the Cordon Vert Diploma, day and weekend courses are available. Whatever
gets your taste buds tingling! Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai, the Cordon
Vert has it all!
- We operate the ’approved
by ’ trademark, which is widely recognised as the most trusted guarantee
of vegetarian suitability. The Society is constantly at work with the
food industry and supermarkets to guarantee the best possible choice
and the most exciting food available for vegetarians.
- The Society’s education department
is working closely with schools and colleges to increase awareness of
vegetarianism. Our school speakers provide balanced, educational talks
and resources to promote a healthy, compassionate alternative.
- Our information/research department advises health professionals,
students and the public about why vegetarianism makes sense. We keep
up-to-date information on health,
nutrition, consumer issues and the latest vegetarian research.
- The Society has a large collection of great veggie
recipes and images for you to use.
- By providing information to the media, the public, health professionals,
schools and caterers, the Society is helping to change attitudes across
the country.
We keep vegetarianism on the agenda for the public, media and government
