An early day motion (EDM) is a kind of parliamentary petition and if
enough MPs sign can have a big impact. Please contact your MP straight
away so we can make a real fuss about this issue during National Vegetarian
Week.
How to Contact Your MP
Phoning your MP may seem daunting,
when in fact it is one of the easiest and most and helpful ways in which
you can campaign. Your MP is your
representative in parliament so they do have a duty to listen to your
views.
You probably won’t get to speak to your MP in person, but the
staff that they employ will listen to what you have to say and pass
it on to your MP. If you follow-up the phone call with an email, you
will
make their lives easier (by providing all the information again in
an easy to use format) as well as reminding them that this issue is
important
to you.
If you really feel too shy or are too busy to call, then an email alone
may also work.
To find out who your MP is as well as getting their email address and
phone number, visit http://www.locata.co.uk/commons.
What to Say
• Make sure they know that you are a constituent (include your
postal address in your email) and that you are contacting them because
you
feel strongly about this issue.
• Tell them how you feel about Masterfoods use of animal whey and their
comment implying that most vegetarians will not mind.
• If you feel comfortable doing so, tell them why you are a vegetarian,
but don’t try to persuade them to go veggie themselves – they
are short of time and we need their signature so save your arguments
against meat-eating for another time!
• Ask them to sign Early Day Motion 1481 USE OF ANIMAL BASED RENNET BY
MASTERFOODS LTD.
If They Say Yes
• Say thank you!
• Send an email confirming that they have agreed to sign EDM 1481,
to act as a reminder and also encourage them to support our cause
in the
future.
If They Say No
• If your MP is a Minister or party whip they may have
a policy of not signing EDMs. If they tell you this on the phone,
still send an email,
acknowledging what they have said and perhaps wishing them a Happy
National Vegetarian Week!
• If your MP simply says no, ask them politely for a reason
why but don’t
badger them – it is important to keep the door open for the
future and they may have an interesting perspective that we have
not thought
about.
Whatever They Say
Please let us know who your MP is and what response
you receive from them. Email liz@vegsoc.org
