Mars Latest

10 August 2007
The Vegetarian Society welcomes the recent announcement by Masterfoods regarding its new vegetarian labelling system for Mars confectionery products and recognises this as a positive step. However the Society is disappointed that, due to the use of battery eggs in the iconic Mars Bar, Masterfoods were unable to proceed with The Vegetarian Society’s accreditation.

The Vegetarian Society's door is always open to companies seeking to better serve vegetarians. A Masterfoods representative has made contact with us and we are very pleased that they now recognise the importance of integrity to all their customers, especially vegetarians. We cannot endorse any planned actions by the company until we receive detailed assurances about the ingredients and processes involved in production but we are delighted that Mars UK has been honest enough to mark the beginning of National Vegetarian Week by admitting that it made a mistake. The best thing they could do now is, of course, to take up our accreditation scheme and earn the right to brand their products as Vegetarian Society Approved."
~ Dr Annette Pinner, Chief Executive, The Vegetarian Society.

Masterfoods have put a list of products of their website showing best before dates on or after which the products will be suitable for vegetarians. They state that the products will be available in stores in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Our current understanding is that any other Masterfoods confectionary product not on the list is unsuitable for vegetarians.

Mars Products not Veggie

14 May 2007

The Vegetarian Society is extremely disappointed to learn that Mars favourites such as Mars, Milky Way, Bounty, Snickers, Galaxy, Twix and Maltesers are now all unsuitable for vegetarians. At a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods’ decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step. Mars products are very popular with young people and many will be shocked to discover that their manufacture now relies on the extraction of rennet from the stomach lining of young calves.
