THE BIG QUICHE COOK-OFF
National Vegetarian Week springs into action with an early bird challenge This year's theme for National Vegetarian Week - the seven day veggie challenge, has inspired some early activity from North-West local groups Manveg and Lancsveg. On Sunday March 23rd the groups used a recipe from our new Satisfaction booklet to 'give quiche a chance' (their words, sung to the tune of the John Lennon classic, Give Peace a Chance). Contestants brought their own variations of the Red Onion and Cheddar Quiche to The Vegetarian Society HQ, to compete for the title of The North West's Most Satisfying Quiche Cook. The
reason for the two month head start on NVW (it actually takes place
from May 19-25): On the day we were blessed with glorious sunshine and so were able to hold the event in the garden here at Parkdale. Spring has only just sprung but it felt like the height of summer! The garden party atmosphere was heightened by the arrival of 'star of stove and screen' Richard Cawley. The Ready Steady Cook regular has created his own version of the Satisfaction quiche recipe - Sweetcorn, Onion and Stilton Tart, so alongside Cordon Vert manager, Christine Tilbury, he was perfectly placed to judge the competition. The entries looked delicious and it was a struggle to restrain ourselves from scoffing the lot before the judges had done their tasting! It was quite amazing to see how much creativity our simple recipe had inspired - there was even a sweet quiche, which, though it didn't win the competition, was arguably the most visually stunning. In the end the prize went to Jay and Heena Davé of the Preston based Lancsveg group. Their vegan-friendly Spicy Chick Pea Quiche went down a storm with the judges and Richard Cawley declared it "Inspired, unusual and just gorgeous - a clear winner!". So congratulations Jay and Heena, it's official, you are The North West's Most Satisfying Quiche Cooks! Well done too, to everyone else who took part, all the quiches were winners in my book.
