Press Release
Green your diet to reduce environmental impact
National Vegetarian Week 21-27 May 2007
sponsored by Cauldron Foods.
1 May
Changing your diet could make a big difference to your environmental
impact according to a new publication from The Vegetarian Society. Almost
a fifth of climate-changing greenhouse gases come from livestock production.
Animals reared for meat are a major source of water pollution and the
majority of deforestation is carried out to clear land for livestock
pasture and the growing of their feed crops.
‘Why it’s Green to Go Vegetarian’, published to coincide
with National Vegetarian Week 2007, explains why vegetarians’ meat
and fish-free lifestyle reduces their impact on the environment. To get
a copy call 0161 925 2000 or visit www.vegsoc.org.
Annette
Pinner, Chief Executive of The Vegetarian Society, commented, “For
2007 we are focusing on the ways that vegetarianism can help reduce your
environmental impact. Vegetarianism is not only a healthy and ethically
sound diet it is a major step to help reduce greenhouse gases, conserve
water and conserve land. With climate change making headlines and many
people unsure of what they can do to help, giving up meat is positive
choice for you, for the animals and for the world we all share.“
