All
the leaflets and posters arrived in time for NVW (love the
poster design - very eye catching).
Materials were distributed in the workplace, to members, meat
eaters and in restaurants.
The local press, Evening Echo, published a week long debate
entitled 'could you go vegetarian'.
SAVeggies ignored the bad weather
to visit the Butcher's Arms, Great Dunmow for a fantastic meal,
serenaded with music and arias by members of the London Larks.
Delicious veggie food to the strains of 'Just one courgetto'.
Enormous fun.
The following day we had our drop in at Cafe Pulse and managed
to tuck away more tasty morsels.
The week finished in true veggie style back at the Butcher's Arms'
Beer Festival. The rain poured down but didn't dampen the spirits
or the potent vegan cider served in the beer tent - reached by
a lively run across the gardens. They had made special efforts
to ensure veggie/vegan beer and food were available. Pleased to
report that 50% of people on the Saturday had asked for the veggie
BBQ!

Walking the Cleveland
Way |
The walk
went very well, we all thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful countryside
and wildlife. We covered 200km in 10 days, a holiday not a
route march! We had mixed weather which bordered on the cold/
rainy so our t shirts (thanks for them again) were mostly covered
in either a fleece or rain jacket!
We reached the half way point at Saltburn-on-Sea on Saturday 26th where Anna,
Tim and beautiful puss Lara at The Rose Garden b and b gave us a wonderful welcome
with tea and a very yummy vegan chocolate cake. Anna even packed some up for
us to take when we left on Monday morning. Fantastic accommodation and amazing
breakfasts. Luckily we had booked two nights and as it was we were sad to go.
We felt as if we were staying with friends. I can't recommend it enough. |

Iwade Primary School |

Over the course of the
week, I planned two activities - one with the children in
my Reception
class
and one with all
members of staff.
My class ‘tried and tested’ a
range of Vegetarian food (including veggie sandwiches made
of quorn
ham and tomato/cucumber,
quorn sausages, and quorn quarter pounders). They loved the food
and we spent time talking about what they had tried and drawing
and writing about our taste tests.
I prepared a staff vegetarian lunch
later in the week for all members of the teaching staff.
Staff were
given
the opportunity
to sample veggie food products that they may not have tasted (or
even seen) before. It was a really worthwhile, fun and exciting
experience that served to open the eyes of ‘non-veggies’, showing
that there is more to a vegetarian diet than just vegetables!!
Staff tried and liked most of the food on offer, with the most
popular food being the quorn nuggets - a firm favourite!
Ideas explored and discussed during
National Vegetarian Week are being re-addressed this term
in our topic
of ‘Food’.
I hope our discussions may encourage children to include more fruit
and vegetables and vegetarian products in to their daily diets
in future and hope children will gain a good understanding of the
benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Our 'rendezvous by
the river' barbecue to celebrate NVW was a great success
and, despite rather mixed
weather
during
the week, on the
Sunday we had a glorious day. The marquees donated for the day
by R&M LEISURE, were only needed to shade our wonderful array
of food. Lisa from BEANIES and Sarah from REDWOODS sent us boxes
filled
with all sorts of goodies. Add to that our own contributions for
example Norma's Greek salad with her homemade vegan 'feta cheese'
and Caroline's bananas stuffed with Fair-trade dark chocolate for
baking on the barbecue and we had a feast! It was great to meet
some new friends and we are all looking forward to doing it again
next
year.
