Meat the Truth, a thought-provoking documentary, presented by Marianne
Thieme (a Dutch MP and leader of the Party for the Animals in the Netherlands),
explores the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and meat consumption.
The documentary demonstrates how the livestock industry is responsible
for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, while the transport sector
accounts for 'just' 13%. It addresses the fact that climate policy has
thus far failed to recognise the necessity of reducing the consumption
of animal protein. In many respects, Meat the Truth, which was produced
by the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation (the scientific bureau of the Party
for the Animals), can be seen as an erratum to earlier documentaries,
such as An Inconvenient Truth, which overlooked the impact of livestock
production on climate change.
National Vegetarian Week, sponsored by Cauldron Foods is held from 19-25
May. Now in its 16th year, the high profile awareness week promotes inspirational
vegetarian food and the benefits of a meat-free lifestyle.
The premiere of Meat the Truth will be held at the Odeon West End cinema
(40 Leicester Square, London WC2). The film starts at 10 am and will
last around 80 minutes.
