Vegetarian for Life is a new charity set up in August 2007 with the support of
the Vegetarian Housing Association. It aims to improve standards of catering
for older vegetarians and vegans throughout the U.K. Because of our ageing population,
ever more people are living in care homes and retirement complexes, or relying
on home care and meals on wheels. Vegetarian for Life is aware of cases where
elderly vegetarians and vegans have struggled to get acceptable food and it can
be difficult for caterers in a resource poor environment.
The new charity intends to tackle
this and related problems with a range of services including: an accreditation
scheme for good providers; a website and information service; specific catering
guides; menu and nutrition advice; and specialised training for cooks.
The
first guide, Catering for Older Vegetarians & Vegans – A
practical guide for care homes, retirement schemes and others catering for
older people, will be distributed free of charge to around 15,000 homes and
other caterers during National Vegetarian Week, May 19th to 25th 2008. The
VfL website will be fully operational by then and will provide downloads
of the guide and a comprehensive recipe service.. |
