VEGETARIAN SOCIETY PATRONS

The Vegetarian Society’s five patrons make a huge contribution to the Society’s work promoting understanding and respect for vegetarian lifestyles through their public profile, the media and all kinds of practical support.

Rose ElliotROSE ELLIOT published her first cookery book in 1967 and hasn’t looked back since. Nor have the readers of her more than fifty vegetarian books focusing on meat-free meals which are easy, health-giving and – of course – delicious! Rose was awarded an MBE for services to vegetarian cookery in 1999 and became a patron of The Vegetarian Society in 2002.
“I feel very honoured to be a patron of The Vegetarian Society. You only have to read a magazine, watch the TV or walk round a supermarket to see how far its influence has spread. There's always work to be done and I send all my best wishes - and support - for future campaigns.”

jerome flynnActor JEROME FLYNN first found fame in Soldier Soldier and has been wowing critics and audiences alike with his portrayal of Tommy Cooper in Jus' Like That! Jerome became a vegetarian at 18 after reading some leaflets about factory farming. “It made me aware of the cruelty involved in meat production and I realised that I couldn't continue to add to the suffering by being a meat eater. Now, I am delighted to be a patron and to be able to support the work of The Vegetarian Society. The Society has an important role as an independent voice for the UK's 3 million vegetarians and is leading the way in educating and informing teachers, caterers and manufacturers about this healthy and compassionate way of life.”

sir paul mccartneySIR PAUL MCCARTNEY needs no introduction from us!
“As Patron, I am more than pleased and proud to be associated with The Vegetarian Society and to show my support for its work. If you think about it, what could be better than enjoying great tasting food that is not only good for your health, but also far better for the planet and the creatures that live with us upon it?"

stella mccartneyFashion designer STELLA MCCARTNEY is well known for her uncompromising vegetarian standards, believing that “it is wrong to eat dead animals on many levels: it is destructive for the environment, it is not ethical, it has been proven to be damaging to
your health and, spiritually, you should love and live with your fellow creatures, not kill them!" Stella describes the best thing about being a vegetarian as “waking up in the morning with a clear conscience” and says that "it is a great honour for me to be a patron of The Vegetarian Society. It is a brilliant organisation and you can support them by going veggie now!"

OTHER PROMINENT VEGETARIANS

From Pythagorus and Plato to Mahatma Gandhi and Tolstoy, vegetarians have been in the public eye for centuries. Celebrities choosing a cruelty-free diet today include actors Woody Harrelsen and Scott Maslen (The Bill); musicians Moby and Heather Small; politicians Tony Benn and the late Tony Banks; comedians Dave Spikey and Sean Hughes; poet Benjamin Zephaniah and novelist Ruth Rendell – to name just a few.
