I would be a veggie but….

Vegetarians are often asked about why they don’t eat meat and fish. Many non-veggies accept most of the arguments but reach a point where they just can’t imagine not eating meat. Pupils could explore some of the excuses offered. Here are some we have heard:

• I don’t like vegetables
• Eating meat is natural
• God made the animals for us to eat (and other religious positions)
• If you don’t eat meat you’ll die
• I would but my parents won’t let me
• If we didn’t eat meat what would happen to all of the animals?

I don’t just live on lettuce!

Friends and family often have serious misconceptions about what a vegetarian diet is really like. Veggie students may like to write a poem describing all the tasty and exciting things they do enjoy.

Healthy eating

Eating a balanced vegetarian diet is healthy. Pupils could explore the joys of healthy eating and living and turning away from junk food.

NB: This is a great opportunity to introduce a nutritional perspective to your lessons. The government recommends that we all eat at least five portions of fruit or vegetables per person per day. More information can be found at the Department of Health’s website (see useful web links).

Granny says I’m just being fussy…

Older people were brought up with different food than most of us eat today. Your grandparents would probably find it very strange to live without meat. But how would you like to eat some of the things that used to be eaten every day like brain, tongue, trotters, and even sausages made from blood?
