SUPER SARNIES!
Far from the staple Cheddar cheese or egg mayo options, pre-packed sandwich companies are getting imaginative and expanding their varieties that are suitable for veggies. In fact, these days, vegetarians are spoilt for choice at the sandwich counter. We can choose anything from Mexican bean and guacamole wraps, to mozzarella, olive and sun-dried tomato paninis! Even the traditional Cheddar cheese filling is being over-shadowed by the likes of Wensleydale or Cambembert! And for the extra health conscious veggie, companies have improved in other areas too, like healthier breads and low fat veggie spreads. The Vegetarian Society wants to big-up the ‘butty’ makers who are catering for widening vegetarian tastes. To do so we are going to award the sandwich company that produces the most delicious choice with one of our prestigious Vegetarian Society Awards. Public nominations can be cast on our website at www.vegsoc.org/awards . The closing date is 31 July 2006, with the winner being announced in October 2006. The Vegetarian Society’s Awards are highly regarded in the food and drinks industry. They promote best practice among caterers, manufacturers and retailers, and highlight the importance of integrity in the vegetarian market place. Spokesperson for The Vegetarian Society, Collette Walsh, says: “Sandwiches are a convenient option for veggies who are looking to snack or lunch on something tasty and filling. The growing variety of interesting and delicious fillings, as well as types of sandwiches, is really inspiring. May the best butty win!” EDITORS NOTES For more information about The Vegetarian Society Awards, please contact Collette Walsh, Press Officer, on 0161 925 2012 or email: (collette@vegsoc.org), Out of hours contact: 07973 108 165
