BBC Beavers made honorary members of The Vegetarian Society

The stars of this year’s BBC Autumnwatch, beavers Twiggy and Woody based at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust Martin Mere, were today recognised for their contribution to debunking the popular misconception that vegetarians (and beavers) eat fish. Presenting the wetland mammals with honorary membership of the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world, The Vegetarian Society acknowledged their sterling work in educating the nation that they, like all vegetarians, do not eat the flesh of any animals.

“Despite what many TV chefs think vegetarians don’t eat fish and never have, it was great to see such a popular programme getting the message out. The Vegetarian Society felt Twiggy and Woody did such a great job that we have decided to make them honorary members of the Society.” said Su Taylor spokesperson for The Vegetarian Society.

Many things have changed since The Vegetarian Society was founded in 1847 but two important definitions haven’t:

“ VEGETARIAN” – someone who doesn’t eat animals
“ FISH” – cold-blooded, water-dwelling animal
