Vegetarians support farmers

17 May

An unlikely alliance is being encouraged between vegetarians and UK farmers.

The Vegetarian Society is calling on vegetarians across the country to support their local farming communities by buying local seasonal produce. Farmers markets are also being applauded with the launch of a new award – Best Farmers Market for Vegetarians. The award is launched during National Vegetarian Week 21-27 May 2007 along with a free seasonal recipe collection Season to Taste.

Annette Pinner, Chief Executive of The Vegetarian Society, commented, “With all the fruit and vegetables that vegetarians get through – we really are supporters of the farmers. But vegetarians can really make more of a difference by buying seasonal produce - ingredients will be fresher and therefore tastier. If produced locally, they will have less impact on the environment, thanks to reduced energy use and associated carbon dioxide emissions from their distribution. Most of all it’s a great way to support your local economy and help ensure farming communities thrive and prosper.”

Season to Taste has twelve mouth-watering, monthly recipes, using seasonal and locally sourced produce and is available free of charge by calling 0161 925 2000. To vote for the Best Farmers Market for Vegetarians go to www.vegsoc.org/awards
