July 2007

Can’t stand the heat – get out of the kitchen.
Vegetarians claim eating meat causes more environmental damage
than driving.

Climate change is a hot topic for a reason - it’s happening, and human activity is, at least in part, responsible. Individuals want to know how they can help to reduce their impact on the environment - so all elements of daily life are being scrutinised from light bulbs to car use, the rubbish in your bins to your holiday destination. However little has been said about the role your kitchen plays in climate change.

The type of food we eat has huge implications on our environmental impact.

Farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions (18%) than the world’s entire transport system (13.5%).
Thirty percent of the earth’s entire land surface – a massive 70% of all agricultural land – is used for rearing farmed animals.

Diet is an important tool in working to achieve environmental sustainability. For anyone wanting to find out more about the issues surrounding diet and climate change The Vegetarian Society has produced ‘Why it’s green to go vegetarian’. This booklet covers climate change, water use, fishing, land use and why going vegetarian can make a difference.

‘Why it’s green to go vegetarian’ is fully referenced and is available online at www.vegsoc.org or as a free booklet by calling 0161 925 2000.
