Who is the sugar daddy? Vegetarian sweets taste just as good as non veggie sweets but are free from animal ingredients such as gelatine, non-veggie whey and cochineal. Jelly based sweets will often contain gelatine, cochineal can be found in sweets and whey in chocolate. But what do vegetarians pick up from their local shop when they’re feeling a bit peckish, or want a naughty sugar hit? Sweets - not the healthiest things you can eat but from the school yard to the business briefcase everyone loves them, so which sweet is your favourite? The humble humbug, the sour sherbet lemon or flying saucer are amongst traditional favourites, then there are chocolate bars, candy, jelly beans, pear drops, liquorice, toffee or lollypops. The Vegetarian Society is looking for the nation’s Best Vegetarian Sweet, vote now at www.vegsoc.org the closing date for entries is 3 September 2007. Gelatine is a gel obtained from boiling animal skin and tendons, while
non-veggie whey is a by-product of making non-veggie cheese. Cochineal(E120)
is a red food dye made from crushed beetles. Veggie alternatives are
available.
