Could Manchester be the best UK destination for vegetarians?

Manchester has been short-listed for The Vegetarian Society Award for ‘Best UK destination for vegetarians’. Members of the public nominated the place they feel has the most to offer vegetarian visitors, with Manchester, Edinburgh, Brighton and Glastonbury gaining the most nominations.
The Manchester region has long been considered the home of vegetarianism – the UK vegetarian movement was instigated by the Salford preacher Reverend William Cowherd in 1809, and The Vegetarian Society held its first annual meeting in Manchester in 1848. Greater Manchester is still home to The Vegetarian Society which now boasts 16,000 members.

Chris Olivant, who has dedicated 17 years of his life to working for The Vegetarian Society said: “Manchester and vegetarianism go hand in hand. The city offers vegetarians a fantastic amount of choice – visitors will find that we are blessed with several dedicated veggie restaurants, cafés, take-aways and even shops, not to mention the veggie-delights that can be found on the Curry Mile and in China Town.”

The judging process is now underway with destinations scoring points for accessible tourist information about vegetarian friendly eateries, guesthouses and hotels - as well as the actual quantity and quality of provision for vegetarians. Results will be announced at The Vegetarian Society Awards on 28th October 2004.
