Vegetarian Society invites nominations for its annual awards

The Vegetarian Society Awards are an opportunity to celebrate vegetarianism and highlight those companies striving to improve the choice and range of vegetarian products and services enjoyed by the UK’s 3 million vegetarians -as well as the growing band of ‘meat reducers’ (around half the population) who tuck into vegetarian meals several times a week.
It only takes a minute to nominate those companies and services that YOU think deserve recognition for their outstanding efforts in helping to make the vegetarian lifestyle even more delicious, convenient and fun! Simply log onto www.vegsoc.org before the end of July.
This year The Vegetarian Society is introducing some brand new categories, in addition to some of the favourites from 2003, including the popular (Im)Perfect World Award, which prompted previous winner, Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps, to change their recipe and stop using cheese made with animal rennet!

Nomination categories are:
  Best exclusively vegetarian gourmet restaurant
Best provider of vegetarian fast food
Best retailer of vegetarian wine & beer
  Best vegetarian babyfood
  Best meat or fish substitute
  Best vegetarian cooking sauce
  Best UK destination for vegetarians
  (Im)Perfect World Award

The judging panel and mystery diners will make their decisions this Autumn and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony which takes place on Thursday October 28th at London’s Magic Circle.

The Vegetarian Society’s ‘approved’ trademark was established in 1969. Since then it has become the most widely recognised and trusted stamp of vegetarian approval anywhere in the world. The symbol can be found on a huge range of products, including retail food and drinks, catering supplies, household goods, cosmetics and toiletries.

The strength of the symbol is based on products meeting the following criteria:
• Products must be free from all meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and crustacea.
• Products must not contain slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fat.
• Any eggs used in the product must be free-range.

The Society also requires that cross contamination does not occur between vegetarian and non-vegetarian products during food production. No other symbol gives consumers such reassurance and inspires the trust that comes from the Vegetarian Society approved symbol.
