Vegetarian Society invites nominations for its annual awards

Hot on the heels of National Vegetarian Week, The Vegetarian Society is inviting members of the public to nominate their region for the title of ‘Best UK destination for vegetarians’ at this year’s Vegetarian Society awards. They also want to hear about local restaurants and eateries that provide great food for veggies.
It only takes a minute to have your say, simply log onto www.vegsoc.org or phone 0161 925 2000 for a voting form before the end of July.
After the success of last year’s (Im)perfect world award which prompted recipient, Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps, to stop using cheese made with animal rennet in their product, The Vegetarian Society also wants nominations for products that could easily be veggie but, which for one ingredient or another, aren’t.

Nomination categories are:
  Best UK destination for vegetarians
  Best exclusively vegetarian gourmet restaurant
Best provider of vegetarian fast food
Best retailer of vegetarian wine & beer
  Best vegetarian babyfood
  Best meat or fish substitute
  Best vegetarian cooking sauce
  (Im)Perfect World Award

The judging panel and mystery diners will make their decisions this Autumn and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Thursday October 28th at London’s Magic Circle.
Ends

The Vegetarian Society Awards are an opportunity to celebrate vegetarianism and highlight those companies striving to improve the choice and range of vegetarian products and services enjoyed by the UK’s 3 million vegetarians -as well as the growing band of ‘meat reducers’ (around half the population) who tuck into vegetarian meals several times a week.

The Vegetarian Society’s ‘approved’ trademark was established in 1969. Since then it has become the most widely recognised and trusted stamp of vegetarian approval anywhere in the world. The symbol can be found on a huge range of products, including retail food and drinks, catering supplies, household goods, cosmetics and toiletries.

The strength of the symbol is based on products meeting the following criteria:
• Products must be free from all meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and crustacea.
• Products must not contain slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fat.
• Any eggs used in the product must be free-range.

The Society also requires that cross contamination does not occur between vegetarian and non-vegetarian products during food production.
