August 2004International Conference says world must eat less meatIronic though it seems as the UK summers storms and floods, the World Water Week (15-21 August) conference in Stockholm discussed the impact of meat eating on worldwide water shortages this week and came to the conclusion that the world must eat less meat. A statement issued by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) says that “with 840 million people undernourished or lacking a secure supply of food, and another 2 billion or more people by 2025, feeding the world’s growing population – and finding the water to grow the food – continues to be a basic and sizable challenge.” Anders Berntell, Executive Director of SIWI said “Animals fed on grain, and also those which rely on grazing, need far more water than grain crops.” Producing one kilo of grain-fed beef requires 15 cubic metres of water, while a kilo of cereals uses between 0.4 and 3 cubic metres.* The maths isn’t difficult, and neither is switching to a healthy, satisfying, plant-based diet. The Vegetarian Society’s free booklet ‘Food for Thought’ makes it even easier. Phone 0161 925 2000 to order yours or visit www.vegsoc.org for simple advice, support and recipes.
