Solving the School Junk Food Scandal The Vegetarian Society applauds the Education Minister Ruth Kelly’s call for tough new nutritional standards, better ingredients, and better training for catering staff in our schools. Ms Kelly’s determination to banish low-quality processed ‘junk’ food from our children’s school dinners is a move that The Vegetarian Society is keen to support through its work as an educational charity. The Society is committed to educating young people, and those that cook for them, about the benefits of healthy eating, and how to meet nutritional requirements in a simple and affordable way. To achieve this, the Society provides training courses for professional caterers at the Cordon Vert culinary institution, and also offers free information, recipes and advice to school and college caterers. A dedicated schools’ and colleges’ catering pack is now available, free of charge, to all establishments. The pack, available as a booklet or on CD-Rom, contains around 50 healthy recipes, all designed to be child-friendly, use inexpensive ingredients and go a long way towards meeting the recommended ‘5 fruit and veg a day’ requirements. Recipes have proved popular with vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. To order your free copy of ‘Vegetarian Catering for Schools and Colleges’, and for more information about professional catering courses at the Cordon Vert, call 0161 925 2000.
