Who we are and what we do

Who are The Vegetarian Society? - The Vegetarian Society is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world, formed in 1847!

As a registered charity, it offers an independent voice dedicated to promoting and providing information on a vegetarian diet. We are the modern face of vegetarianism and the leading experts.

The Vegetarian Society is a membership organisation. We exist to represent our members and the UK’s vegetarians by raising awareness through educating, providing information, research, contact with the media and by working with the food industry.

National Vegetarian Week. The Society organises and co-ordinates the week, our main awareness event.

The Vegetarian Society Awards highlight and reward vegetarian excellence and innovation in vegetarian products and services.

The Vegetarian Society’s Cordon Vert Cookery School
We promote the best of vegetarian cooking through our very own Cordon Vert Cookery School, the home of vegetarian cuisine.
The school holds courses throughout the year for everyone, from the amateur to the professional.
As well as the Cordon Vert Diploma, day and weekend courses are available. Whatever gets your taste buds tingling! Italian, Middle Eastern, Thai, the Cordon Vert has it all!

Vegetarian Society Approval
We operate the ‘approved by’ trademark which is widely recognised as the most trusted guarantee of vegetarian suitability.
The Society is constantly working with the food industry and supermarkets to guarantee the best possible choice and the most exciting food available for vegetarians.

Youth Education Department
The Society’s education department works closely with schools and colleges to increase awareness of vegetarianism through cookery demonstrations, speakers and resources. Our expert advice and experience is available for Food Technology teachers and students through to after school cookery clubs.
Our lively and interactive cookery demonstrations promote healthy eating as well as introducing students to cookery techniques, ingredients and fabulous food.

School speakers also provide information on nutrition, statistics, marketing and packaging and new foods.

To support students we provide a wide range of resources including posters, video and student packs.

Our political programme is addressing the problem of accurate labelling.

Trying to find veggies around the UK? We have a network of volunteers available across the country, we’re also able to place requests for help onto our email lists.

By providing information to the media, the public, health professionals, schools and caterers, the Society is helping to change attitudes across the country. We keep vegetarianism on the agenda for the public, media and government.
