Winners of the 2002 Vegetarian Society Awards

Last night (Thursday 7th November), the Vegetarian Society held its second award ceremony and fundraising gala ball at London’s Waldorf Hotel. The prestigious event to promote best practice and integrity among caterers and manufacturers brought together the cream of the vegetarian business world, a host of celebrities and the friends and supporters of the Vegetarian Society. The celebration also raised funds for the important educational work of the Vegetarian Society.

The Vegetarian Society is pleased to reveal the final decisions reached by Christine Tilbury of the Cordon Vert School and celebrity judges Richard Cawley, Rose Elliot MBE and Hazel O'Connor after nominations were made by members of the public.

The Vegetarian Society was thrilled to give two special awards - Rose Elliot was taken by surprise when she was declared ‘Best Vegetarian Cookery Writer’ and the final award of the night, in recognition of individual contribution and commitment to vegetarianism the Achievement Award went to Juliet Gellatley. A former employee of the Vegetarian Society, Juliet went on to found the campaigning organisation Viva!

All the nominees for this year’s awards demonstrated an exceptional level of customer care and product development. The Vegetarian Society would like to commend all the nominees for working to make life tastier, friendlier and more convenient for vegetarians.

The Vegetarian Society is the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world. It offers an independent voice to promote and provide information on vegetarianism.

The Vegetarian Society defines a vegetarian as a person who eats no meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea. Vegetarians also avoid the by-products of slaughter such as gelatine or animal rennet in cheese. The Society only approves products containing eggs when they are free range.
