Consumer support

The Vegetarian Society receive many emails and calls about vegetarian food labelling and the issues surrounding them. Examples of the types of queries we receive include:

Stall lady passing over a bag of fruit & veg

  • Items of food labelled as being suitable for vegetarians when they are not: they may contain fish, parmesan or a slaughter-derived additive, or there may be an issue with cross contamination in a products handling/production. This may either be a finished product available from a supermarket or an item on a restaurant menu.

  • Non-vegetarian food items displayed in a designated vegetarian chiller compartment.

  • Items of food which used to be suitable for veggies, but are no longer so due to a change in ingredients. For example, vegetable soups made with meat stock or confectionery containing gelatine.
