Trustees

Vegetarian Society Logo on railingsThe Vegetarian Society's governing body is its board of trustees, also referred to as Council.

Trustees have overall legal responsibility for the charity. They must ensure that:

  • the charity pursues its objects or purposes, as set out in its articles of association
  • the assets (including funds, investments and property) of the charity are protected and used exclusively to pursue its purposes
  • the charity complies with the law and its articles of association
  • the charity remains solvent and is not exposed to undue risk.

Trustees must act at all times in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries. They must avoid situations where their personal or other interests conflict with the interests of the charity and must not profit from their role unless it has been allowed. In carrying out their duties, trustees have a duty of care to act reasonably and prudently, and a higher duty in areas of their own expertise.

Trustees work in a voluntary capacity and focus more on the strategic direction of the charity rather than operational details. Trustees work as a team and ideal candidates will be able to offer some relevant skills based on their own life and work experience.

Trustees' Promise to Members

Vegetarian Society members are at the heart of the organisation and they determine the work we do and shape the services we provide.  The enthusiasm and commitment of our members is what drives us forward.  As a society, we would not exist without our members.

Our promise to members is:

  • We will base our work on the needs of our members, the vegetarian community and the general public

  • We will hold an Annual Meeting every year and invite members to meet the Trustees, hear about our work and to comment and make suggestions

  • We will tell  members about the work of the Vegetarian Society through the members magazine, the website and our e-newsletters

  • We will publish our Council minutes on the website for members to read so that our processes are open and transparent

  • We will publish the Trustee Recruitment Policy on the website and advertise to members when we have Trustee vacancies. We welcome applications from members to fill any vacancies that arise as we are committed to representing the vegetarian community on our Council and to increasing its diversity

We are regulated by the Charity Commission for England and Wales. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the activities of the Vegetarian Society you can contact Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive (lynne@vegsoc.org, 0161 925 2000) or David Bennett, Chair of Council (chair@vegsoc.org).
