What should happen about the current five pound note?
2 December 2016
This week the news broke that the Bank of England’s new £5 notes contain traces of tallow. The Vegetarian Society decided to gauge the views and opinions of the public and of Vegetarian Society members via an online poll as to what should happen about the current five pound note. In the first 24 hours over 65% of the Vegetarian Society members who voted said the existing £5 notes should stay, but new notes should be made without tallow. This dropped to just over 55% of the members of the public who voted. Around 30% of the Vegetarian Society member respondents and around 39% of the public respondents felt the notes should be withdrawn.
The poll was accessed via www.vegsoc.org with members and supporters encouraged to take part via social media channels and direct emails.
Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive of the Vegetarian Society said: "We ran a poll over 24 hours for our members and the public to give us their views on the issue of the new £5 note containing tallow. In total 1,325 members of the public and 812 members of the Vegetarian Society voted. Over 65% of the Vegetarian Society members said the £5 notes currently in use should stay, but new notes should be made without tallow. This dropped slightly for the members of the public, to just over 55% of those who voted.
"The majority of our members and supporters appear to want the £5 note to be made without tallow in the future, but are willing to accept the notes that are currently in circulation. However, it is important we also recognise that a significant proportion of our members and supporters (around 30%) are not comfortable with this, and would prefer the notes to be withdrawn. Around 39% of the public who voted also wanted the notes withdrawn.
"We have been in touch with the Bank of England regarding the matter of the new £5 note. We are pleased that they recognise this is a concern for some people and are taking the issue seriously. We believe that they will fully investigate this matter and are happy to continue to work with them to help find a solution."
The question was worded as follows:
What should happen about the current five pound note? With multiple choice answers of:
•The £5 notes containing tallow should be withdrawn
•The existing £5 notes can stay but new notes should be made without tallow
•The existing and future notes should be made with tallow
