National Vegetarian Week 18-24 May 2015, sponsored by ‘Nothing But’

- launches in Newcastle-upon-Tyne

 

NVW15 tour

 

On Monday 18 May National Vegetarian Week, sponsored by ‘Nothing But’, will launch in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The week is a celebration of all things veggie and this year has as its theme ‘Share!’ The Vegetarian Society and its cookery school will be marking the start of the week by sharing pizza with visitors to its travelling pizza kitchen. Pop along to Northumberland Street South, Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 11:30 to 14:30 to watch our cookery school whip up a pizza, help choose the toppings then taste the fruits of their labour. Alex Connell, Principal Tutor at the Vegetarian Society Cookery School said, “We are really looking forward to launching National Vegetarian Week in Newcastle. It’s a beautiful and bustling city so where better to start our seven-day pizza sharing tour? Come on down and say hi, watch us creating the pizza, choose toppings and then sample a delicious slice! We want to get out and share delicious veggie food with as many people as possible during the week. Recent studies have shown that around 20% of the population are choosing to eat more meat-free meals so this is great way for us to show how tasty vegetarian food can be - and what better to share than pizza!”

Newcastle is the start of the Vegetarian Society’s tour of the UK, covering almost 800 miles and creating delicious pizzas to share in 7 locations. They will be visiting:

18 May – Newcastle, Northumberland Street South

19 May – Glasgow, Sauchiehall Street

20 May – Belfast, SS Nomadic, Titanic Quarter

21 May – Liverpool, Church Street

22 May – Leicester, Humberstone Gate West

23 May – Reading, Broad Street

24 May – Cardiff, Working Street

 

Join in with National Vegetarian Week 2015. According to the results of a YouGov survey published in 2014 around 20% of British adults have cut back on the amount of meat they eat over the last year, and around one in three people (35%) say they are willing to consider eating less meat.

5 facts on freeze drying:

Most people already consume freeze dried goods - the largest freeze dried product in the world is instant coffee but many food products like cereals now include freeze dried fruit.

In the USA freeze dried fruit and vegetable snacks are very popular and are already in every supermarket. 

Freeze dried fruit maintains its taste and essential nutrients - all that’s been removed is about 85-90% of its weight which was water. Nothing else is added. 

Freeze dried fruit and vegetables have a great fresh taste and have a much longer shelf life so reduce wastage.

Freeze drying works by freezing and then reducing the surrounding pressure to allow the water in the product to change directly into water vapour - the result is great, fresh-tasting fruit and vegetables which make the perfect healthy snack.
